John Cook & Lucy Merson

This John Cook (1822-1914) resident of Gays River worked his long life with wood and wool. The Presbyterian Church was vital to the Cooks and to most of the community, John serving as an elder and Sunday school teacher for years. His wife, Lucy Merson (1826-1915) was the daughter of William Alexander Merson and Jane Abigail Grant to distinguish her from another Lucy Merson who married George Taylor Cook. Jane Cook Benjamin (1846-1917)

Jane Cook was born in Gays River, NS as was her husband, Henry Albert Benjamin (1841-1917). Henry was a Lieutenant  but details about how he earned his rank are unknown. They were parents to 13 children.

Georgina Cook Theakston (1852-1929)

Georgina was born in Gays River, NS but spent most of her life in the city of Halifax, NS. She married Robert Theakston (1839-1930) whose job title was, City Collector, referring to revenues. Seven children were born to them. Both Georgina and Robert are buried in Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax.

Albert Cook (1854-<1930)

The farming life was not for Albert. He married in Halifax to Sarah J. C. Thomson and they moved to New York City. Albert was variously a salesman of insurance and also of paints. He also had a second wife, Bertha E. Allen, but parented no children. He died in Syracuse, New York.
